Mercedes-Benz Golf Involvement 2017: Season start for Mercedes-Benz After Work Golf Cup

May 9, 2017
Stuttgart | Munich

Stuttgart | Munich. The Mercedes-Benz After Work Golf Cup (AWGC) started a new season on 24 April 2017. With around 3000 tournaments at over 290 golf courses, the After Work Golf Cup consists of 9‑hole tournaments for amateur golfers: throughout Germany, across the season and open to all players of both genders. The traditional opening event for media representatives took place on 9 May in Munich.

The AWGC season from 24 April to 22 September is aimed above all at working golfers and at players who do not have the time for all-day golf tournaments. This means that, on weekdays from 5.00 pm, competitive golf can be played over nine holes. The tournaments are for handicap classes 6 - 2 (from -54 to -4.5) and count towards the players' handicaps. The special, and uniting, element of the AWGC is the various online rankings. These allow all registered competitors to measure themselves against other players over the entire season while at the same time qualifying for attractive prizes. Competitors can register on the AWGC website at http://www.awgc.de/. In addition, all golfers can keep up with the latest news on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MBAWGC.

All registered golfers will be eligible for the main prize, awarded by Mercedes‑Benz, which is a CLA Shooting Brake worth around 45,000 euros. There are also annual, monthly and weekly prizes. For the first time, under the motto She's Mercedes, there will also be a special prize for female players only. The prizes on offer have a total value of over 250,000 euros. In 2017, the organisers expect around 30,000 competitors with approximately 75,000 tournament rounds played.

Also as far as international interest in the 9‑hole format is concerned, the Mercedes-Benz After Work Golf Cup ranks as a trailblazer. "The Mercedes-Benz After Work Golf Cup offers amateur golfers a special opportunity to combine their passion and enthusiasm for golf with a spirit of tournament competition. This event concept is designed to promote the compatibility between working life and a time-intensive hobby such as golf. The steadily growing field of competitors, along with the high number of participating golf courses in Germany, is also arousing interest in the tournament format in other countries," says Dr. Jens Thiemer, Vice President Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars.

On 9 May 2017, the traditional opening event took place at Golfpark München Aschheim. Two Mercedes-Benz brand ambassadors, Karolin Lampert and Marcel Siem, teed off together with two athletes from the partner charity Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe, Tobias Arlt and Konstantin Schad. As confirmation of the growing international interest, a number of foreign media representatives were present alongside the German journalists.
