Mercedes-Benz completes its pickup model range: The X-Class with V6 engine and permanent all-wheel drive – the performance pickup for sporty lifestyles

Aug 1, 2018

Stuttgart. Whether city traffic, twisting country roads, steep gravel tracks, or muddy forests: the X-Class with powerful six-cylinder engine, 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive impresses with its outstanding dynamism, assertiveness, and stylish appearance. The new X 350 d 4MATIC flagship model (combined fuel consumption: 9.0-8.8 l/100 km, combined CO2emissions: 236-230 g/km)1 develops 190 kW (258 hp) and a peak torque of 550 Nm. The tough performance pickup completes the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. Permanent all-wheel drive ensures high levels of driving stability and handling dynamics both on and off the road – even on wet and wintry asphalt. A choice of engine and transmission response levels, from comfortable to sporty, is at the driver's fingertips. The X 350 d 4MATIC therefore offers the perfect blend of sportiness and practicality – for an agile life packed with variety. Since July 2018, the top-of-the-range model can be ordered with the PROGRESSIVE and POWER equipment lines in Europe. In Germany, prices for the X 350 d 4MATIC start at 53 360 euros (incl. 19 percent VAT). In addition, there are two EDITION models available: PROGRESSIVE EDITION (47 490 euros incl. 19 percent VAT) and POWER EDITION (53 490 euros incl. 19 percent VAT).

The Mercedes of pickups offers outstanding off-road capability, high payload and immense pulling power as well as ride comfort and handling dynamics on the road. This high level of on-road performance is largely down to the wide track, the long wheelbase, and the sophisticated comfort suspension. It consists of a ladder-type frame, double-wishbone independent front suspension, a five-link rear axle with a rigid section, and coil springs on both axles. In combination with the 190 kW (258 hp) six-cylinder diesel engine and permanent all-wheel drive, the new X 350 d 4MATIC delivers an extra serving of driving pleasure and handling dynamics on and off the road.

Superior performance and fast gearshifts

The 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine with common-rail direct injection impresses with its sheer assertiveness. Its maximum torque of 550 Nm is available over a wide engine speed range from 1400 to 3200 rpm. This means that high torque is already available from low engine speeds. Whether for a sporty driving style, comfortable long-distance touring, or off-road driving in difficult conditions – the V6 always ensures serene and efficient progress. Its special features include lightweight design, the single-stage turbocharger with variable turbine geometry for particularly agile engine response, and the innovative NANOSLIDE® cylinder liner coating also used in Formula 1.

The 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission included as standard, complete with steering wheel shift paddles, operates with no interruption in tractive power during gearchanges. This improves the handling on gradients, in off-road terrain, and when towing a trailer. Further advantages include fast shift operation and a low engine speed level. This has a positive effect especially with regard to efficiency and noise levels. The wide gear spacing allows an individual driving experience via the DYNAMIC SELECT system. Manual gear changes are also possible using the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

DYNAMIC SELECT for an individual choice of driving characteristics

With the DYNAMIC SELECT system, which is fitted as standard, the X 350 d 4MATIC features a driving mode switch that has seldom been available in the pickup segment to date. With a choice of five driving modes, the driving characteristics can be changed by fingertip control – from relaxed and comfortable to sporty and dynamic. These modes modify the engine response, the automatic transmission's shift points, and the ECO start/stop function:

  • Comfort: This mode is activated automatically when the engine starts. It provides comfort-emphasising, harmonious accelerator characteristics as well as early shift points.
  • Eco: 7G-TRONIC PLUS changes the gears at particularly low engine speeds.
  • Sport: The engine responds more immediately to throttle input. The automatic transmission makes use of the entire engine speed range to change gears, and shifts at higher engine speeds.
  • Manual: The automatic transmission can be manually operated using the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. This leads to far shorter shift times than in the Comfort and Eco programs.
  • Offroad: This mode is suitable for driving on challenging terrain. It offers higher shift points and a flatter, and therefore more precisely adjustable, accelerator characteristic curve.

The ECO start/stop function is available in all driving modes except Offroad mode. The DYNAMIC SELECT switch is located in the central control panel on the centre console. The selected mode is shown as a status and, when the mode is changed, appears for a short time as a pop-up display on the instrument cluster's multifunction display.

4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive for driving on and off the road

The 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive with low-range reduction gear and an optional differential lock on the rear axle ensures excellent performance and traction on a wide range of driving surfaces. The all-wheel drive system features a two-stage transfer case which is flange-mounted to the 7G-TRONIC PLUS main transmission. It is fitted with a central differential of planetary design, which distributes the drive force between the front and rear axle at a fixed torque distribution of 40 to 60 percent. This rear-biased configuration ensures improved vehicle dynamics and higher lateral acceleration on the road, and better traction during acceleration. When driving off-road, optimum traction is ensured by a continuously adjustable interaxle differential in the transfer case, in the form of an electromechanical multiplate clutch. This ensures that the traction potential of all four wheels is fully realised on demanding terrain.

There are three all-wheel-drive modes to choose from: 4MAT for increased vehicle dynamics, 4H for improved traction off-road, and 4L for tough off-road terrain. The combination of a controlled interaxle differential lock (0–100%), rear-axle locking differential, and reduction gear delivers good performance both on and off the road.

The all-wheel-drive system and the suspension with its long spring travel and ground clearance of up to 222 millimetres together ensure outstanding off-road capabilities. The X-Class effortlessly climbs gradients of up to 45 degrees, fords water courses with a depth of up to 60 centimetres, and maintains its poise on inclines of almost 50 degrees.

Driving pleasure and quiet running on a par with passenger cars

With 1632 millimetres at the front and 1625 millimetres at the rear, the X-Class has a wider track than most competitors. Providing the ideal prerequisites for optimum driving stability and higher cornering speeds. At 3150 millimetres, the wheelbase is also longer than in many midsize pickups. This reduces vibrations during the journey and makes for smooth and reliable straight-line stability.

The robust ladder-type frame forms the basis for heavy-duty transport loads and tough off-road assignments. The comfort suspension is designed in such a way that it achieves a high level of vehicle dynamics and ride comfort on a par with Mercedes-Benz passenger cars on the road, while also delivering maximum off-road capability in conjunction with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. A double-wishbone axle at the front ensures a high level of vehicle dynamics, good comfort in terms of road roar and tyre vibrations, and maximum off-road capability. The anti-roll bar reduces body roll. Because the front axle is decoupled, the independent wheel suspension minimises the vibrations which are transferred to the vehicle body, making the steering and noise level comfortable. Located precisely and with comfort firmly in mind thanks to its five links, the rear axle provides traction on even the toughest of off-road terrain. There is plenty of ground clearance as the axle housing is raised as soon as a wheel drives over an obstacle. Because the axle has good articulation capability and spring travel is long, the contact between the ground and the wheels is as good as it can be. Due to the exceptional rigidity of this design, particularly precise wheel control and a high level of driving comfort are assured on the road.

Both axles are fitted with coil springs, which helps balance the comfort of the suspension. The suspension struts on the front axle are connected with the ladder-type frame by means by a head bearing. Damping forces are transmitted via a piston rod to a flexible rubber mount in the head bearing and subsequently to the ladder-type frame. The rubber mount's design is therefore optimised for comfort. Dampers on the rear axle are attached directly to the ladder-type frame via a support bushing. The shock absorbers are designed to be flexible in generating counter-balancing forces. During normal driving on flat roads and when driving slowly off-road, the system responds softly. With a sporty driving style or sudden evasive manoeuvres, the dampers become stiffer for good driving stability.

Thanks to precision suspension tuning, specific structural reinforcements on the frame and bodyshell, and a comprehensive sealing system, the X-Class offers its passengers a level of refinement on a par with the V-Class people carrier.

Comprehensive range of safety equipment

The X-Class features a comprehensive array of comfort and safety features seldom seen in this segment. The basis for the high level of occupant protection is provided by the particularly robust bodyshell with its high-strength passenger cell, plus a structure whose front and rear sections are able to absorb energy by specific deformation. For passive safety, the standard equipment includes seven airbags and the i-Size attachment system for two child seats. With Active Brake Assist and Traffic Sign Assist, two driver assistance systems are at the ready to simultaneously increase active safety and comfort. Additionally the X 350 d 4MATIC – as the top model of the X-Class –h as the Active Lane Keeping Assist. Further there is ESP trailer stabilisation, a tyre pressure monitoring system, an emergency call system, cruise control, and LED headlamps that deliver the brightest light output in the segment thanks to six LEDs respectively. A reversing camera or a 360-Degree Camera are available as options. Given this extensive level of equipment, the X-Class fulfils the requirements placed on a modern family and lifestyle vehicle.

Two equipment lines for the X 350 d 4MATIC

The X 350 d 4MATIC is available in the equipment lines PROGRESSIVE and POWER, both of which set new standards for comfort and perceived value in the midsize pickup segment. They differ in design, level of equipment, and functionality. In both lines, the X-Class flagship model features KEYLESS-GO and two-zone THERMOTRONIC air conditioning as standard.

The PROGRESSIVE line includes the following as standard: 17-inch 6-spoke light-alloy wheels, air vents in electroplated silver chrome, leather-lined steering wheel and parking brake, seats in black Posadas fabric (optionally ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre), the infotainment system Audio 20 USB, and an eight-speaker system.

Optional extras and extensive range of accessories for individual character types

Further customisation is possible thanks to a wide range of optional extras such as an electrically opening rear window. What's more, Mercedes-Benz has designed an extensive range of accessories so that users can customise their individual X-Class even further. If required, the design, functionality or off-road capability can be enhanced to suit specific needs. In addition to the new sports bar, which can be combined with a roll cover in black or silver, there is a choice of styling bar, hard cover, hardtop, stowage box, load bed liner, load-securing rails in the load bed, and an underguard. These accessories will augment the X-Class model range successively.

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class has been specifically developed for the changing requirements of the international pickup market. The demand for midsize pickups with typical passenger car characteristics and comfort features has been steadily on the rise for years. At the same time, the number of pickups for private use is increasing. They are no longer viewed purely as "workhorses". As the first premium manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz is taking these changes into account – based on its comprehensive experience and competence developing commercial and off-road vehicles such as the Unimog and the G-Class for "tough work", as well as developing vehicles such as the V-Class and Vito, which are equally suitable for work or leisure, and passenger cars that uniquely stand for modern luxury and driving pleasure around the world.

Generally, the X-Class is aimed at very different groups of customers: landowners and farmers in Argentina, business owners such as building contractors in Australia, families with an affinity for premium products in Brazil, for example, trend-conscious individuals in South Africa or the UK, as well as sporty, enthusiastic adventurers in New Zealand.

Like no other pickup, the new X-Class resolves apparent contradictions: modern design and convincing robustness, impressive off-road capabilities and a high level of vehicle dynamics, stylish comfort and well thought-out functionality. Making the X-Class the Mercedes of pickups. This tough performance pickup delivers the driveability and handling to match many demands – both with regard to vehicle dynamics and ride comfort.
