Benz until 1926

  • Stuttgart, Jan 19, 2016 - It was the document that set the world in motion: on 29 January 1886, Carl Benz applied for a patent on his "gas-powered vehicle". This was the day the automobile was born. Later the same year, independently of Benz, Gottlieb Daimler built his motorised carriage. Thus it was that 1886 marked the beginning of the so far 130-year-long success story of Mercedes-Benz.

  • Stuttgart/Swakopmund, Apr 1, 2009 - The first crossing of Africa by car was successfully completed on May 1, 1909 when Paul Graetz arrived in Swakopmund in today's Namibia, formerly German South West Africa, in his special vehicle produced by Süddeutsche Automobilfabrik Gaggenau GmbH, a company that became Benz-Werke Gaggenau at a later stage.

  • Stuttgart, Mar 14, 2009 - The German engineer and inventor Prosper L'Orange was awarded a patent for his prechamber principal (DRP 230 517) on 14 March 1909. The prechamber principal made possible the development of the diesel engine from being a stationary source of power to one with mobile applications.

Roger was not only a high-performing sales partner for Carl Benz; this step also marked the beginning of foreign sales for Benz.

One specimen of 1888 which is retained in its original condition now comes to Germany: The Automuseum Dr. Carl Benz in Ladenburg will host the oldest original automobile in the world. It is a loan of the Science Museum, London.

Both vehicles were lacking a decisive feature, however: a steering system matched to the vehicle and capable of coping with the prevailing conditions and speeds.
