Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC: Workout for the best-seller

Jun 23, 2015
Updated name, extended model range and even more power: the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC is more powerful and attractive than ever. Following the introduction of the new nomenclature, the evolution of the successful Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG is now called the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63. The AMG 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 engine is even more powerful than before: in addition to the basic variant developing 410 kW (557 hp), there is also the highly sporty S-Model to choose from, which is rated at 430 kW (585 hp). The chassis was completely revised to deliver even better driving dynamics and agility. The new DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes promise maximum individuality. For the hallmark AMG Driving Performance, the throttle response of the engine and the shift times of the transmission are now on a new, even sportier level. The power SUV also has a more dynamic look than before, which is underscored by the characteristic AMG family face featuring A-wing and twin-blade radiator grille.
Whether it be technology, design or equipment – the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 fascinates in many facets while offering maximum driving performance. The unique driving experience and superior product quality are tangible in every detail. The successful balance between high comfort, sportiness and breathtaking performance produces pure emotion. Authentic driving dynamics are characterised by the agile throttle response, short shift times and – a trademark typical of AMG – the distinctive engine sound.
The strong heart of the new GLE 63, the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine, is now even more powerful. The increase by 24 kW (32 hp) to 410 kW (557 hp) delivers significantly improved performance, with the GLE 63 accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds (ML 63 AMG: 4.8 seconds). The power output of the S-Model has increased by a further 20 kW (28 hp) to 430 kW (585 hp) to allow acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds.

Despite the increased power output and improved acceleration, fuel consumption remains at the level of the previous model. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine thus demonstrates its high efficiency. The different output and torque of the two engine variants are the result of a higher maximum boost pressure. The S-Model features an additional integral charge-air cooler in the left-hand wheel housing. Both models benefit from the favourable aerodynamic positioning of the engine oil cooler in the front section.
Regardless of which output the customer chooses, the 8-cylinder engine, which is assembled according to the philosophy of "one man, one engine", can be visually upgraded if desired with a carbon-fibre engine cover. The engine badge bearing the engine technician's signature is a typical AMG hallmark of utmost precision and production quality.
One hallmark AMG feature: the unmistakeable V8 engine sound
As is customary for an AMG model, the GLE 63 also has a unique sound. The V8 engine sounds different depending on the DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode that has been selected: restrained in COMFORT mode or roaring and distinctive with SPORT+. Here the driver experiences every gearshift in a more emotional way as the momentary retardation of ignition and injection under full throttle speeds up gear shifting and is also audible behind the wheel. The double-declutching function when downshifting and the "exhaust rumbling" in overrun mode make the hairs on the back of the neck stand up when in the cockpit – and evoke the sound of a DTM touring car.
The new DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes
Superior high everyday practicality and perfect traction, sports-car agility and spontaneous throttle response – the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 guarantees its driver an exclusive driving experience without parallel. The new DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes are a major factor in this as well by enabling tremendous variance in driving dynamics. The five transmission modes of Slippery, Individual, Comfort, Sport and Sport+, which the driver selects using a rotary control on the centre console, deliver tailor-made driving dynamics. Throttle response, gear-change strategy, ESP® thresholds, steering power assist or the characteristic of the continuous damper adjustment exclusive to AMG: the system networks all the control systems to generate a wide variety of distinct driving experiences. "Individual" mode allows the driver to configure their own personal set-up, consisting of engine characteristics, gear-change strategy and damper tuning.
AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC with temporary M mode
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC adapts with lightning speed to the respective DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode. Relaxed cruising in "Comfort" mode is accompanied by extremely smooth gear shifting, while a sportier driving style in the AMG-exclusive Sport+ mode is characterised by fast shift speeds and emotive gear changes to deliver the kind of driving performance typical of the brand. The convincing result is that Sport+ allows even greater longitudinal and transverse dynamics for more intense driving pleasure behind the wheel. By pressing the M button in the centre console, the driver can shift between the seven gears using just the steering wheel gearshift paddles and can fully savour the tremendous tractive power from the high-torque V8 biturbo engine.
Dynamically minded drivers also benefit from the temporary M mode, which combines the performance of manual gear changes with automatic upshifts and downshifts. After the driver has shifted up or down manually using a shift paddle, the transmission independently reverts to automatic shift mode after a set period of time.
Comfort mode with sailing function
With DYNAMIC SELECT, the COMFORT mode has an integrated sailing function. It helps to further lower fuel consumption: when the driver releases the accelerator in a speed range from 60 to 160 km/h, the engine is disengaged from the drive system. The electronics reduce the engine speed to idle level, and the driving resistance is reduced by the compression and frictional forces of the engine in overrun mode. The "sailing" function is indicated in the AMG instrument cluster by an icon depicting a stylised sailing yacht. The ECO start/stop function is also available in the COMFORT transmission mode, switching off the engine at traffic lights and helping to save fuel.
To consistently guarantee a high level of comfort and minimal vibration, the seven-speed automatic transmission is equipped with a dual-turbine torsional damper with speed-sensitive centrifugal pendulum.
All-wheel drive with rear-biased power distribution
For AMG Performance 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, Mercedes-AMG uses a specially designed transfer case. This exclusive solution splits the torque in a ratio of 40:60 between the front and rear axles to provide higher agility about the vertical axis of the vehicle. The pay-off for the driver is to make cornering even more dynamic. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AIRMATIC package comprises more than just air suspension with automatic level control. The new GLE 63 also comes with special spring struts, which have been refined with ADS Plus continuously variable damping characteristics, a solution exclusive to AMG. ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM roll stabilisation is part of the standard equipment for this model. This system employs active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles to reduce the body's roll angle during cornering. The reduced roll angle and outstanding cornering properties make for enhanced transverse dynamics and driving pleasure. At the same time, the system provides increased driving stability and therefore safety, especially at higher speeds.
Roll stabilisation, infinitely variable damping and suspension adapt automatically to the prevailing driving situation to offer both optimum ride comfort and maximum stability. The damping system changes its priorities depending on the preselected DYNAMIC SELECT mode. "Comfort" mode offers maximum ride and suspension comfort. "Sport" mode firms up the shock absorbers and reduces the vehicle height by 15 millimetres. In "Sport+" mode, the GLE 63 gives an even firmer ride – with the emphasis on maximum possible transverse dynamics. In addition, the air suspension lowers the body by a further 10 millimetres.
The fully load-bearing air suspension system is speed-sensitive. The current operating conditions are detected via the steering angle sensor, four level sensors, three body sensors, the driving speed as well as the positions of the brake pedal and accelerator. The control unit uses these signals for lightning-fast and infinitely variable adjustment of the current damping force for each individual wheel.
AMG-specific axles and Sports Direct-Steer system
The axles, too, have undergone AMG-specific optimisation in the interests of high precision and agile handling. The newly developed elastokinematics on the double-wishbone front suspension and the larger stabiliser on the multi-link rear axle produce the typical AMG direct driving experience with spontaneous reactions and distinct response characteristics.
The Sports Direct-Steer system too has been fundamentally revised and adapted to the driving dynamics of the performance SUV. The moderate variable steering ratio makes for significantly improved agility, while high-speed driving safety is maintained. Dependent on the vehicle speed and DYNAMIC SELECT mode, the variable power assistance adapts perfectly to the driving situation.
Extremely short stopping distances and high stability also when the driver adopts a highly dynamic driving style – these are the strengths of the AMG high-performance braking system. The standard equipment includes all-round ventilated and perforated brake discs measuring 390 x 36 millimetres (front) and 345 x 26 millimetres (rear) as well as silver-painted brake callipers with white AMG lettering. The more powerful GLE 63 S can be identified by its red brake callipers with black AMG lettering.
Powerful sportiness with front A-wing
Performance and perfection revealed: the design of the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 fascinates with its exclusivity, powerful sportiness and dominance. From now on, the GLE 63 also sports the distinctive "A-wing" in the front apron, which is characteristic for the AMG design philosophy. The design of the radiator grille with the silver chrome twin-blade louvre, the integral AMG lettering and the central Mercedes star are distinguishing features of current AMG Performance vehicles.
The new design goes hand in hand with fascinating technology: the A-wing in the form of a stylised "A" is three-dimensional, painted in the colour of the vehicle and features a trim strip in silver chrome. It serves as an air guide for the three diamond lattice air openings. The external black flics ensure an optimal flow of air onto the cooling modules. At the lower end of the front apron, the front splitter in the colour of the vehicle helps to reduce lift. Three-dimensional LED High Performance headlamps are fitted as standard. Two dynamic powerdomes on the bonnet emphasise the sculptural design idiom of the GLE 63.
Dominant, muscular and athletic
The performance SUV also impresses with its dominance when viewed from the side. AMG-specific, flared wheel arches in the vehicle colour provide space for the large wheels. As standard, tyres of size 265/45 R 20 are fitted on 9 x 20 AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish. Optionally, the GLE 63 can be upgraded in terms of looks and driving dynamics with tyres in size 295/35 R 21. The 10 x 21 cross-spoke light-alloy wheels are available in two variants: painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish or painted in matt black with a high-sheen rim flange. A typical AMG distinguishing feature is the "V8 BITURBO" lettering on the front wing. As an alternative to the side sill panels, side running boards in an aluminium look with anti-slip rubber studs are optionally available.
The GLE 63 also impresses from the rear with its muscular and athletic look: The black diffuser insert in the rear apron with black trim strip in the shape of the front A-wing represents typical motor racing design. The special exhaust system with two chrome-plated twin tailpipes and "AMG" lettering underscores the sportiness and exclusivity. Above the new LED tail lights are the model badges "AMG" (on the left) and "GLE 63" (on the right).
Design differences in the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S top-of-the-line model
The GLE 63 S comes with an even more distinctive and sportier look: the A-wing in high-gloss black and the trim strip in silver chrome make an immediate impression. Also on the rear apron, the trim strip is in silver chrome. The wheel arches are perfectly filled out by the 10 x 21 standard-fit cross-spoke alloy wheels, painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, with 295/35 R 21 tyres. The design variant painted in matt black with a high-sheen rim flange is alternatively available. The red-painted brake callipers with black AMG lettering are a genuine eye-catching feature. At the rear, the S-Model distinguishes itself with a contrasting black "S" on the right next to the GLE 63 lettering.
Interior design and equipment at the highest level
In the interior too, the new GLE 63 demonstrates what makes a true AMG Performance vehicle: exquisite materials, first-class workmanship and maximum precision. Design and equipment underscore the sportily exclusive high-end positioning.
Aluminium trim with longitudinal grain in the black ARTICO man-made leather instrument panel set shiny attractive highlights. Animated graphics on the semi-integrated central display visualise the individual DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes. The centre console houses the COMAND controller, to the right of which is the DYNAMIC SELECT rotary control for the various transmission modes. Located above is the M button for the manual transmission mode, with the button for manual damper adjustment found on its left.
Perforated nappa leather sports seats with special upholstery layout and topstitching as well as AMG badges make for an exclusive look and feel. Thanks to their specific upholstery with greater contouring and higher side bolsters at the front, the sports seats offer excellent lateral support. This is further complemented by the 3-spoke Performance steering wheel: the steering-wheel rim, with flattened bottom section, in black nappa leather with perforated grip area assists a sporty driving style. Silver aluminium shift paddles with "UP" and "DOWN" lettering and precise pressure point act as an invitation to manual gear changing.
Instrument cluster with characteristic AMG design
Informative and sporty design: Two tube-shaped round dials with silver chrome surrounds and the central 11.4 cm (4.4-inch) multifunction display provide the driver with comprehensive information. The typical AMG equipment scope includes sporty dials in carbon-fibre look with 320-km/h speedometer scale, AMG lettering and red pointers, as well as the main menu including RACE TIMER, manual gear indicator and AMG start-up screen. Optimal infotainment and a brilliant sound are guaranteed by the Audio 20 CD system with eight loudspeakers and the Remote Online communication module for the use of Mercedes connect me services in Europe (may vary from country to country).
The interior of the GLE 63 S too is now even more exclusive
Like the exterior, the interior of the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S top-of-the-line model has further highlights. The Exclusive AMG nappa leather upholstery is a visual and tactile highlight. Customers opting for a black interior get crystal grey topstitching and alpaca grey seat belts. In addition, the Performance steering wheel comes with a grey 12-o'clock marking. The steering wheel provides even better grip thanks to the DINAMICA microfibre grip area. AMG medallions in the head restraints lend the interior an especially luxurious note. A sporty look also dominates the driver's field of vision: the instrument cluster has an even higher-class look with fine red scale graduations around the speedometer and rev counter and a grey decorative band.
